Grow Your Own Teacher

How Does Harmony Grow Its Own Teachers?

Grow Your Own Teacher began in 2011 to fill an ever-larger need for teachers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Any former Harmony student may apply. The scholarship program pays a portion of student's college tuition in exchange for three years of teaching at a Harmony school. GYOT Recipients must:

  • Work part-time at Harmony
  • Maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA
  • Obtain an undergraduate degree within 4 years

The “Grow Your Own Teacher” program is part of Harmony Public School’s ongoing commitment to meet the demand for highly-skilled educators in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math. GYOT encourages Harmony graduates to pursue a degree in the field of their choice and obtain a Texas teaching certificate. The program is not a loan and participants not expected to repay the assistance they receive. Instead, they are required to teach for a minimum of two years after graduation and receipt of their teaching credentials.

Program Overview

“Grow Your Own Teacher” offers participating graduates of Harmony Public Schools partial (full?) assistance with tuition and related expenses as well as additional support and individualized mentoring. In return, participants are required to work part-time at a HPS campus, maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, and obtain an undergraduate degree, within four years, in any academic major that qualifies for a Texas teaching certificate.

Since being implemented in 2011, the “Grow Your Own Teacher” program has helped XXX Harmony graduates attain their undergraduate degree and teaching certificate. The majority of these alumni have stayed beyond the required two-year employment period. Currently XXX alumni are employed as classroom teachers at a Harmony campus.
