I-SWEEEP 2010 brought together over 1,000 brightest science like-minded students and their supervisors in Houston. Young scientists from 70 countries and 43 U.S. states displayed their 470 science projects about pressing issues of energy, engineering, and environment.
Winners of I-SWEEEP not only received a medal for hard work but also scholarships and monetary awards totaling $350,000. The weeklong event also brought together a wide array of people universities, K-12 institutions, government agencies, and energy industry. Texas Railroad Commissioner, Elizabeth Ames Jones was in attendance in the long waited opening night and greeted I-SWEEEP students.
The grand award of Energy category went to Hong Jun Choi and Jeong Joon Park from the Republic of Korea. Hong and Jeong developed a novel method to produce bio-ethanol, which would potentially be put in commercial use.
Engineering grand award winners were Gennifer Rubin and Audrey Leasure from Florida. Gennifer and Audrey developed an innovative electroless intermetallic coating to reduce infrared emissivity and temperature oscillation in metal alloy saw blades. Their project helps prevent iatrogenic injury and patient discomfort due to use of an oscillating saw for cast removal.
The Environment grand award went to Nikolce Kolev and Stefan Kuzmanovski from Macedonia. Nikolce and Stefan developed a revolutionary new biodegradable bioplastic by using cellulose acetate enhanced with natural fibers. The new non-harmful bioplastic can be used to produce textiles, bags, and containers.
