Students who enroll in 1A embark on a rich and engaging journey through language, literature, and communication. This high school–level course invites learners to explore a variety of literary genres and writing forms while mastering the art of thoughtful expression and analysis.
Through classic and contemporary literature, students examine how language and style shape meaning and emotion. Instruction also includes compelling informational and explanatory texts, helping students recognize the power of words in both creative and academic contexts. Hands-on writing experiences guide students through the full writing process—from brainstorming and drafting to revising and editing—culminating in the creation of polished narrative and explanatory essays.
In addition to writing, students strengthen their speaking and listening skills, learning how to participate in thoughtful, respectful discussions. English 9 emphasizes not only what students say but how they communicate it, preparing them to engage confidently in diverse conversations both inside and outside the classroom.
The course features three innovative instructional approaches:
- Narrative: Comprehensive instruction centered on grade-level goals.
- Peer Model Videos: Real students demonstrating skills and strategies.
- 21st Century Learning: Focused on critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills essential for success in school, work, and life.
By the end of the semester, students will have gained the tools and confidence to read critically, write effectively, and speak persuasively—skills that will serve them in every academic and professional endeavor.
