Celebrating Excellence in Education: Meet Our 2024–2025 Teachers of the Year

At Harmony Public Schools, we believe great teaching changes lives — and this year’s Teachers of the Year prove just how powerful that belief can be in action.

We’re proud to announce that Parul Chawla and Angela Flakes have been named Harmony’s 2024–2025 Teachers of the Year, standing out among an incredible group of educators from more than 25 cities across Texas. Both award recipients are from Harmony’s Houston South and West Districts, and their stories are a powerful reminder of what it means to lead, inspire, and serve in the classroom.

Honoring Parul Chawla – Elementary Teacher of the Year

Parul Chawla is a Special Education teacher at Harmony School of Excellence – Sugar Land Elementary, where she teaches in the K–2 Life Skills class. Often serving as an Autism unit, her classroom supports young learners who face significant challenges in transitioning to school due to their Autism diagnosis.

For Parul, teaching is not just a career — it’s a calling.

"Being a Special Education teacher is more than a profession, it's a privilege. It's a chance to witness resilience, celebrate progress and make a lasting impact on the lives of children who just need someone to believe in them," she shared.

Her compassion, skill, and unwavering belief in her students make her a beacon of hope for families and an invaluable member of the Harmony community.

Honoring Angela Flakes – Secondary Teacher of the Year

Angela Flakes teaches 7th grade English Language Arts and Reading at Harmony Science Academy – Katy Middle. She first joined the Harmony family in 2022 as a substitute teacher, but quickly distinguished herself as a dynamic educator with a talent for building meaningful classroom culture.

Angela empowers her students to take ownership of their learning. In her classroom, students lead discussions, co-teach lessons, and engage in thoughtful debates — skills that will carry them far beyond middle school.

Her leadership, innovation, and commitment to student growth set a powerful example for educators across the state.

A Message from Leadership

“At Harmony Public Schools, we believe great teaching is the foundation of student success,” said Ramazan Coskuner, superintendent of Harmony Public Schools, Houston South & West Districts.
“Our Teachers of the Year embody that belief every day through their dedication, innovative instruction and commitment to their students' growth. These outstanding educators inspire not only their classrooms but also their peers and the broader community. We are proud to recognize Parul Chawla and Angela Flakes for their achievements and grateful for the lasting impact they have on our schools.”
