Harmony Elementary Artists Advance to Statewide Visual Arts Championship
Brittany Lehning

Four North Texas elementary students are advancing to the statewide Harmony Public Schools Visual Arts Competition after earning first-place honors at the district level, showcasing both artistic talent and the heart behind this year’s theme, “My Harmony Story.”

Held in celebration of Harmony’s 25th anniversary, the systemwide competition invited students in grades K–12 to reflect on their personal journey at Harmony through drawing, painting, photography or sculpture. Each submission included an artist statement connecting the artwork to the theme.

At Harmony School of Innovation-Euless, third grader Malaak W. earned first place in the drawing category with an illustration of a strong tree representing her school community.

“This picture shows a special tree for ‘My Harmony School,’” Malaak wrote in her artist statement. “The tree’s roots are strong and stand for important things like friendship, respect and kindness.”

In her piece, the leaves symbolize learning experiences, from books to science experiments, while a small school building labeled “second home” reflects the sense of safety and belonging she feels on campus.

Also representing HSI-Euless, fourth grader Valentina L. earned first place in the drawing category for her heartfelt portrayal of school life.

“To me, Harmony means a family,” Valentina wrote. “I feel safe and supported here at my school. I think Harmony is the best place to learn while having fun.”

Her artwork highlights the relationships among teachers, students and families, underscoring the caring and collaborative atmosphere that defines Harmony campuses.

At Harmony School of Innovation–Carrollton, fifth grader Gabriel B. captured first place in the photography category with a digital collage featuring black-and-white photographs he personally took around his campus.

“Even without color, you can see the warmth and pride that make my school such a great place,” Gabriel wrote. “My school blends learning, creativity and a sense of community, which come together in perfect harmony.”

His layered composition reflects both artistic craftsmanship and a deep connection to his school community.

At Harmony School of Innovation–Grand Prairie, third grader Carolina S. earned first place in the painting category with a symbolic image comparing her academic journey to a growing tree.

“My story is like a tree growing,” Carolina wrote. “I started in kindergarten as a seed. Each grade I go to, I grow like a plant does. My teachers are the sun, giving me the energy I need.”

In her painting, subjects become roots and teachers become sunlight, serving as a visual reminder of how Harmony’s student-centered approach nurtures growth year after year.

The four district winners will now advance to compete among Harmony campuses statewide for the grand championship. Winning pieces will be transported to Harmony’s Central Office for final display and recognition.

Because STEM is more at Harmony, fine arts are more, too. Through opportunities like the Visual Arts Competition, Harmony empowers students to express their voices, celebrate their growth and reflect on the supportive environments that prepare them for college, career and responsible citizenship.

As Harmony celebrates 25 years of excellence, these young artists remind us that education is more than academics. It is about belonging, creativity and discovering one’s true harmony.
