Finding their voice: Inside the Amazing Shake at HSI-Carrollton
Brittany Lehning

The moment arrives quickly.

A student steps forward, shoulders squared, eyes focused, as a judge leans in with a question they did not expect. There is no script, no second take, only a few seconds to think, respond and remain composed.

For dozens of students at Harmony School of Innovation-Carrollton, that moment defined the fourth annual Amazing Shake.

Seventy-eight students in grades 3 through 5 entered the three-day competition after months of preparation, each one working quietly behind the scenes since December to build the kind of skills that are rarely tested on paper. Through weekly mentorship, they practiced making eye contact, speaking clearly, listening with intention and carrying themselves with confidence.

By the time the competition began, those habits were no longer exercises. They were expectations.

The opening Gauntlet round moved quickly. Students rotated through six beach-themed stations, each designed to test a different dimension of professionalism. In one room, a student navigated a tense “crabby customer” interaction, balancing politeness with problem-solving. In another, a classmate stood in front of a camera, delivering a live weather report from a teleprompter. Down the hall, others pitched sunscreen products, performed talents and responded to unfamiliar interview questions, adjusting in real time as judges evaluated every word and gesture.

The pace left little room for hesitation.

For many students, the challenge was not just answering correctly, but recovering quickly. A missed word, a shaky start or a difficult question became an opportunity to reset and try again at the next station.

Those who advanced stepped into new environments that raised the stakes. At the networking-style Luau event, conversations replaced presentations, requiring students to introduce themselves, engage thoughtfully and leave a lasting impression. The debate round demanded something different, the ability to organize ideas, defend a position and respond under pressure.

By the time the final six students reached the stage, the competition had shifted from performance to reflection.

Each finalist delivered a speech focused on a Harmony core value, connecting it not only to their education but to their personal experiences. What began months earlier as a series of skill-building exercises had evolved into something more meaningful, a clearer understanding of who they are and how they want to present themselves to the world.

Principal Brett Garrett said that transformation is the true purpose of the event.

“The Amazing Shake was brought to our campus to help students develop important life skills that will help them succeed in school and in the real world,” Garrett said. “It is a practical application of the core values we instill in all our scholars. We want them to grow into confident leaders who can represent themselves in a positive and professional way.”

Throughout the competition, judges offered immediate, structured feedback, giving students the chance to adjust, improve and step back into the next challenge stronger than before.

Engagement Coordinator Tara Schabbing said those moments of growth are what matter most.

“Through different challenges and interactions, students work on communication, confidence, professionalism and good manners,” Schabbing said. “We want our scholars to speak clearly, listen respectfully, make eye contact and carry themselves with confidence, knowing they can handle difficult tasks.”

When the final results were announced, Kasen U. earned first place, followed by Enzo B. in second and Ava A. in third. But across the campus, the outcome was measured in something less visible and more lasting.

Students who once hesitated to speak found their voice. Others who struggled with confidence learned how to stand a little taller, respond a little quicker and trust themselves a little more.

At HSI-Carrollton, the Amazing Shake is not just about how students perform in a single moment. It is about what they carry forward long after the competition ends.

And for many of them, that journey is just beginning.
