Heartbeat of Harmony: Rebecca Tims
A smiling woman wearing sunglasses stands in the foreground against a background of a reflecting pool and the Washington Monument.

For sixteen years, Ms. Rebecca Tims has been a steady, inspiring presence at Harmony School of Excellence. As a high school Social Studies Teacher celebrating 16 years with Harmony and HSE this year, she has spent her career shaping young minds, mentoring student leaders, and transforming history from a list of dates into a vibrant tapestry of human experience.

Ms. Tims's desire to teach began in her own childhood. As a student who faced her own academic struggles, she experienced firsthand the profound difference an educator can make. While some teachers left little impression, the exceptional ones completely reshaped her trajectory, instilling in her a desire to pay that passion forward.

The definitive turning point arrived in her 10th-grade World History classroom. When 9/11 occurred, her teacher helped the class process the overwhelming global event with extraordinary clarity, empathy, and care. Coupled with his signature practice of bringing physical artifacts into class to make history tangible, Ms. Tims realized that studying social studies isn't just about memorizing facts—it is about “the stories that have shaped mankind.” That revelation sparked her lifelong mission to step to the front of the classroom.”

Throughout her tenure at Harmony, Ms. Tims has cultivated remarkable achievements both inside and outside the classroom. Reflecting on her career, she shares:

"I've had so many proud moments throughout my career, but a few stand out. Watching my students graduate and go on to become successful in their own lives never gets old. It reminds me why I do this work. I'm also incredibly proud of my Drone Team, who worked so hard year after year to make it to the championship. Watching my Service Leadership Society students write and develop a bill, then overcome their fear of public speaking to present it to their peers, was another moment I'll never forget. And when I won District Teacher of the Year in 2025, it gave me such a powerful reminder of why I chose this path in the first place."

For Ms. Tims, the ultimate reward remains the human connection. She considers it her highest privilege to watch hallway kids grow into thriving high schoolers, and eventually into accomplished adults making meaningful contributions to society. Seeing her graduates succeed in higher education and diverse careers is the heart of her vocation, a continuous reminder of why she chose teaching to inspire the next generation every single day,
